Surviving the Recession with the Golden Generation

  • Monday, 30 November 2009

the Golden Generation are showing the way forward and proving that age is no barrier to success – something our younger generations would do well to learn from

As the recession starts to bite deeper into people's lives what do you do when your professional working career of over 30 years is cut short by redundancy?

With 1 in 5 young people of working age now claiming benefits or extending their education the real tragedy is unfolding at the other end of the age spectrum. More and more highly skilled and vastly experienced working professionals from a wide range of white collar industries find themselves confronted with the prospects of no morning commute and institutionalised age barriers to getting back into the workplace.

Stripped of their life long routines, an increasing number of the Golden Generation are turning adversity into opportunity and using this enforced life change to pursue dreams that have simmered on the back-burners for years.

Career IT Manager Pauline found herself unemployed at the age of 56, not long after she been a key player in a successful multi-million pound IT bidding team for work with the Welsh Assembly. After being initially shocked by the apparent reluctance of recruitment agencies to help such a mature professional find work, Pauline decided to throw caution to the wind and set up her own business.

“I've always had a passion for aromatherapy and had considered working for myself a few times over the years but the security of a monthly pay cheque and familiarity of working regular hours is a difficult thing to give up” commented Pauline.

Now the proud owner of Primrose Aromatherapy, a thriving on-line aromatherapy retail business, Pauline spends her working day fulfilling orders and talking to her shop's customers. “There are so many ways to set-up in business, especially on the Internet. It is all about applying some of the basic business sense I've learned over the years to a new venture”.

David Geran, Director of InternetRetailer.biz commented “Pauline is one of an increasing number of retired professionals using our Ecommerce service to launch their own retail businesses. Its beneficial for us as well, we learn a lot from discussing business with such experienced professionals, it helps us refine the type of help and support service we can offer.”

As the World holds its breathe and waits to see if the expected double-dip recession becomes a reality, the Golden Generation are showing the way forward and proving that age is no barrier to success – something our younger generations would do well to learn from.
