I use the finest timber and organic materials to create furniture that is natural, beautiful and durable

Like most mothers, Sarah-Jane Matthews wanted to create the dream nursery for her baby daughter. But unlike most mothers, she went literally back to the drawing-board and designed it herself.

Formerly an interior designer, Sarah knew the style she wanted and knew that she wasnn't going to find it. She wanted the nursery to be an extension of the rest of her home, a beautiful haven for her baby. Why shouldn't a nursery be stylish and beautiful as well as practical? What's more, she wanted it to grow with her child, rather than being discarded after the babyhood years.

Having had the vision, Sarah initially set out to create the perfect nursery for her own baby. Her husband owned a kitchen manufacturing company, and he offered the services of his cabinet-makers to turn her designs into reality. Once she saw the finished nursery, however, Sarah started to think. Surely there were other parents out there who felt the same as me? Parents who wanted high quality nursery furniture that was well made, safe, and looked beautiful? In the few spare moments during her daughter's first year, she designed a range of cots, dressers, changing stations and armoires. She finally narrowed the hundreds of drawings down to a few favourites and Bambizi was born.

Her husband's company was too busy to make up the prototypes, so Sarah met up with a Norfolk cabinet maker, David Evans. An old-school craftsman, he'd worked for the best English fine-furniture makers for years and was now making pieces in his own workshop using traditional hand-crafting methods. After much hard work and lateral thinking, he managed to turn Sarah's vision into reality.

Despite her insistence on style, Sarah hasn't compromised on safety. All her furniture is tested to British Standards, making it some of the safest nursery furniture sold in this country. As a parent herself, she understands parents' concerns. "You need to know that your child's fingers won't get trapped, or that they won't overheat in artificial fibre bedding", she says. The cots turn into toddler beds and then day beds; the wardrobes have height-adjustable rails and can then turn into entertainment centres; the changing tables can become beautiful dressers. These pieces are so well made that they could be passed down from generation to generation. In order to reflect the customer's own personal taste and requirements, Sarah also offers a bespoke service. All her furniture is made by hand, and can be crafted and coloured to measure.

Now the mother of two small girls, Sarah has worked hard to establish Bambizi, overseeing everything from design to manufacture to creating the new showroom in the Old Post Office in the centre of Warwick and she is enormously proud of her range, which includes twelve pieces of furniture, organic Bambizi-branded mattresses, organic bedding, a rocking chair and wall stickers. Everything is made in the UK with meticulous care and attention to detail.
