Global digital music distributor crosses over to MariaDB Enterprise after expert open source advice

LONDON, UK 17 OCTOBER 2013 – SkySQL, the trusted provider of open source database support, today announced its latest customer, Believe Digital, the world’s largest fully independent digital distributor. Using SkySQL’s expertise, Believe Digital was able to migrate its data from 4 million artists such as Depeche Mode and Nick Cave from MySQL to MariaDB.

Believe Digital needed a fast and reliable data storage system to handle its integration with hundreds of distributed platforms such as Amazon, Dailymotion, iTunes and Spotify generating over ten million royalty injections per month. Prior to the move to MariaDB, Believe Digital had more than ten database management servers spread over individual clusters and new platform integrations presented new challenges. The technical team at Believe Digital knew its resources would not cope with volume of work needed to update so they sought external advice.

Laurent Taupin, Believe Digital CTO said: “Following SkySQL’s advice, we migrated to MariaDB and we were immediately won over by its new functionalities, flexibility, and especially by SkySQL’s guaranteed support response time. Migration to MariaDB was simple as it is almost identical to MySQL. Our applications were instantly compatible with MariaDB and performance improvements were immediate. Data files are completely compatible as MariaDB operates with Believe Digital’s existing MySQL instance.”

The quality of MariaDB database is built on community input from the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Google. Query execution is a huge challenge for web-based applications and MariaDB offers significant improvements such as optimising subqueries and read/write capabilities.

Patrik Sallner welcomes SkySQL latest signing: “The only way is up for digital services and companies like Believe Digital need to stay on the beat providing ever expanding music platforms. There has been high profile migrations from MySQL to MariaDB recently, we at SkySQL are ready and pride ourselves on giving highly available support to our customers, whether on MySQL or MariaDB databases. This ensures peace of mind for our customers when responses come back in less than 30 minutes, everyday of the year.”

Laurent Taupin concludes: “I did not hesitate to use MariaDB, given its proven technological heritage and remarkable service. Today, when I need to validate a new tool prior to its integration into our IT architecture, I look to SkySQL and MariaDB database to keep us on track.
