East Reading, UK, 8th October 2012 - UTC Reading, the new University Technical College to specialise in Computer Science and Engineering, opening in September 2013, today announced the appointment of a its first Principal, Joanne Harper. Joanne will be spearheading activities in the lead up to the September 2013 launch and be the ambassador for the Thames Valley’s first ever University Technical College.

Joanne qualified from Loughborough University with an honours degree in Math and Education and began her professional life as a Math teacher in London. Throughout her career Joanne continued to teach in London schools and successfully held a number of senior and middle leadership positions before progressing to Principal at Rosedale College, part of the Hewens Academy Trust. Under Joanne’s guidance, the comprehensive school for 11-19 year olds was graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, the official body for inspecting schools. More recently, Joanne has successfully completed the National Professional Qualification for Head Teachers and a Master’s Degree in Education, Leadership and Management. Joanne comments on her new appointment:

I aim to offer students the opportunity to develop practical skills and specialist knowledge required for a successful career in Computer Science or Engineering.”
Joanne starts her new role in January 2013. Recruitment for a Vice Principal is also currently underway. UTC Reading will officially welcome students from 14 to19, in September 2013 and Joanne will be involved in encouraging students interested in specialising in Computer Science and Engineering to enrol. Joanne has specialist experience in Technology and will be able to offer further guidance and support to the students, alongside the prominent businesses in the area that are backing UTC Reading, such as Microsoft, Cisco, Peter Brett Associates and Network Rail. Representatives from these businesses will sit on the governing body, strengthening the level of practical and academic education and support that pupils will receive.
About UTC Reading
UTC Reading is a new University Technical College that will specialise in Computer Science and Software Engineering, taught alongside the national curriculum. UTC Reading opens its doors in September 2013 and will welcome girls and boys aged 14 to 19 within a 15 mile radius of Crescent Road, Reading RG1 5RQ.
The specialist curriculum proposed by UTC Reading will appeal to secondary school-aged pupils interested in Computer Science and/or Engineering, who are keen on pursuing and developing their talents in these areas.
