John Barrowman crowned the UK’s top Celebrity Dog Owner 2012

John Barrowman his dogs and new Award

I'm delighted to receive this Award. My dogs play such an important role in my life and I am proud to promote responsible ownership.

Entertainer John Barrowman and 60s model Celia Hammond are winners of the first ever PetNet Celebrity Pet Owner of the Year Awards 2012, following a frenzy of voting over the past four weeks at http://www.petnet360.co.uk/celebritypetowner.

Despite fierce competition from Alesha Dixon and Paul O’Grady, John Barrowman was a clear winner in the Celebrity Dog Owner of the Year category with fans flooding to the website to show support for him and his pooches Harris, Charlie and Captain Jack. Barrowman said “I'm delighted to receive this Award. My dogs play such an important role in my life and I am proud to promote responsible ownership. I will be donating my prize money to Dogs Trust. As their patron, I understand how incredibly hard they work to find new homes for stray and abandoned dogs.”

During the campaign, one of his fans summed it up by saying: “Not only does John look after his own three adorable dogs he also helps dogs at Dogs Trust and does a lot for dogs more than anyone will know. If anyone deserves to win this John does.”

Celia Hammond’s devoted fans campaigned equally hard to ensure she triumphed over McFly’s Tom Fletcher in a close run competition for the Celebrity Cat Owner of the Year accolade. Commenting on her Award, Celia said: “I am honoured to receive this Award but am even more delighted that our wonderful supporters came out in force to ensure the Trust benefitted from this donation. This will enable us to help even more animals that we rescue from the streets and help low income pet owners have their pets treated.”

One of Celia’s fans commented: “Celia should win this hands down. I remember her when she was a super model in the 60s and since then she's dedicated her life to saving and caring for cats and dogs and other animals.”

Lisa Robb, head of digital at PetNet, the busiest community for dog and cat owners, said: “We are delighted that John Barrowman and Celia Hammond have won our first PetNet Celebrity Pet Owner Awards. From an original list of 82 nominees, 12 celebrities were shortlisted by our expert panel of judges and the overwhelming support of their fans has resulted in two very deserving winners. We are delighted that Dogs Trust and the Celia Hammond Animal Trust will receive GBP 2000 each plus a photoshoot thanks to Venture Photography.”

The PetNet Celebrity Pet Owner of the Year Awards aim to reward celebrity dog and cat owners who have communicated the importance of responsible pet ownership through their involvement with animals and the media.
